The first Dinosaur Charity Run at Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education Welcoming nearly 100 baby dinosaurs to make college history
A large number of adorable "baby dinosaurs” was found in Tin Wan on 11 December, 2022. The Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (“YCCECE”) held a unique Dinosaur Charity Run on campus. Nearly 100 children dressed up in adorable dinosaur costumes to compete in a time trial at the College’s Pamela Peck Discovery Space running track.
The "baby dinosaurs" ran around one after another happily, which immediately turned PPDS into a "dinosaur camp". In addition, PPDS centre teachers have prepared various dinosaur-themed workshops and games to stimulate children's creativity and interest throughout the day. Participating children explored and learnt through play and parents were invited to join the fun-filled dinosaur themed experience. The three runners with the best time won trophies and bagged various gifts home.
Professor Allan Yuen, President of YCCECE, said after award presentation, "Early childhood education is not just about how many new words a child learns. Studies have shown that learning through play is very important in the early childhood stage. Children learn about the world through sensory contact and physical participation, and integrate learning into life. Growing up in an enjoyable play environment is important to building confidence and a positive attitude." Prof Yuen added that different games and activities enhance children’s cognitive development while stimulating their creativity and imagination.
Up to 100 runners were accepted for this event in view of the pandemic and social distancing concern. Ms Winnie Ho, Director of Institutional Advancement and Marketing said, "This is our first Dinosaur Charity Run and also the first dinosaur running event for children aged 3 to 10 in Hong Kong. Many parents and children have enjoyed it and we look forward to inviting more families in the coming year as the pandemic situation eases."
Ms Ho added that the fundraising target of this first trial event was HK$300,000. She thanked all participants for their support of the college. All proceeds will be used to support the development of the college and Pamela Peck Discovery Space.
